Xaloc (sha-LOK) | Solid Perfume
Before summer arrives, the Xaloc tells you. It is the warm, humid wind that rolls in from the south-east across the Valencian coast, soft as breath on the skin, and everything slows to meet it. The evenings stretch. Glasses clink on terraces near the sea. And from the gardens of the nearby houses, jasmine begins to drift over the walls.
That is the night I have bottled here.
It opens with bergamot, pink grapefruit and lime: the salt and sparkle of the first warm evening, ice against the glass, the sea still holding the light. Then the wind turns and jasmine opens, with a whisper of neroli. It is the flower that only gives its full voice after dark, and here it is held in its own wax, melted gently into the balm so it stays close to your skin, the way a scent stays in a summer dress long after the party. Myrrh and buddha wood settle underneath, resinous, smoky, faintly amber, like the warmth that lingers in the stones when the sun has gone.
I grew up with this wind. Now I live where Christmas falls in the middle of summer, and Xaloc is how I bring my two homes together: a Mediterranean night, carried to the other side of the world.
Natural solid perfume, made in a very small batch in my lab on the Mornington Peninsula. Poured into a pebble tin to hold in your hand, or keep in a pocket for later.
